Claude can now read your Gmail—should you be worried?

In a move that’s either brilliant or terrifying (depending on how much you trust AI with your life), Anthropic’s Claude chatbot just got the keys to your Google Workspace kingdom.

Anthropic announced that Claude can now integrate with Google Workspace, giving it access to your Gmail, Calendar, and Google Docs.

For those brave souls who’ve already embraced our AI overlords (and subscribe to Anthropic’s premium tiers), Claude can now:

    • Search through your email threads
    • Peek at your calendar to judge your work-life balance
    • Browse your Google Docs

Anthropic promises this setup is secure

Before you start having nightmares about Claude sharing your secrets with other AIs, Anthropic claims they’ve implemented “strict authentication and access control mechanisms.”

According to a company spokesperson (who definitely isn’t an AI… right?), each user’s connection is authenticated correctly and bound to specific credentials.

“Claude doesn’t have the ability to access or transfer data between different users’ connected services,” the company insists, in what we hope isn’t famous last words.

The AI Assistant Arms Race Heats Up

This isn’t just about Claude getting nosy—it’s part of a larger trend of AI assistants becoming increasingly integrated into our digital lives.

Google’s Gemini already has similar Workspace access, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT is playing catch-up with its own memory features.

    The Bottom Line

While Claude can’t (yet) send emails or schedule meetings on your behalf, this integration marks another step toward AI assistants becoming our digital alter egos.

For now, the feature is available to Anthropic’s Max, Team, Enterprise, and Pro subscribers. The rest of us peasants will have to continue managing our inboxes like cavemen.

Remember when we thought spam filters were impressive? Ah, those were simpler times.
